ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Head of Middle School is an outstanding teacher, pastoral care giver and school leader who has an innovative
and research-informed vision of middle schooling for girls, in alignment with the School’s Strategic Plan. The Head of
Middle School is responsible for the leadership, management and organisation of the Walford Middle School for
students in Years 6-9. This includes leading operations, curriculum, pedagogy, reporting, student wellbeing, pastoral
care, communications with families, students and staff, and cocurricular activities. The role requires a consultative,
compassionate, proactive approach to working with students, parents/caregivers, and a range of School staff.

The Head of Middle School is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Principal.
They liaise closely with the Heads of Junior and Senior Schools, Director of Finance and Corporate Services, Director
of Marketing and Community Engagement, Director of Learning and Teaching, School Chaplain, Head of Enrolments
and Head of Boarding. They line manage Heads of House, Wellbeing Coordinator, and Middle School Mentors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General
- Support the Anglican ethos of the School.

- Comply with School policies and procedures, and the School’s commitment to child safety.
- Be an active member of relevant professional organisations and engage in relevant professional learning.
- Support the School’s mission to develop compassionate and courageous women who live lives of meaning,

purpose and principle; and its vision to be a flourishing, connected learning community that enables each
student to achieve her best, her way.

Executive Leadership
- Provide compelling vision and outstanding leadership in middle schooling, education of adolescent girls,

pastoral care, and futures-thinking learning and teaching.
- Play a lead role in the development, implementation and ongoing review of the School’s Strategic Plan.
- Develop policies and plans that are consistent with the School’s strategy and ensuring compliance with all
- legal obligations relevant to the conduct of the School.- Work alongside the ELT and administration staff to prepare and oversee the School calendar.
- Prepare, submit, manage and monitor the Middle School budget.
- Oversee Heads of House and Wellbeing budgets, in liaison with the Head of Senior School.
- Teach a class in the Middle School (minimum 0.2 FTE equivalent).
- Undertake other duties as directed by the Principal.
- Deputise for the Principal when required.

Learning and Teaching
- Provide vision, direction and leadership of excellence in Middle School philosophy, curriculum, pedagogy,

feedback, assessment, reporting, and learning spaces.
- Work closely with the Heads of Junior and Senior Schools to ensure continuity of learning, teaching,

pathways and opportunities between sub-schools.
- Work closely with the Director of Learning and Teaching, Learning Leaders, Head of Information and

Learning Technologies, Learning Support staff, and Middle School teachers, to ensure outstanding, futures
- thinking learning and teaching in the Walford Middle School for all learners.

2023
- Oversee reporting process and timelines for the Middle School, in liaison with Heads of Junior and Senior

Schools, and the Director of Learning and Teaching.
- Work closely with the Director of Learning and Teaching and Learning Leaders to advise on construction

and management of the School timetable.
- Oversee generation, analysis and use of student achievement data to inform practice, such as tracking

student progress, ensuring intentional class groupings and ensuring appropriate support.
- Oversee and coordinate the outdoor education curriculum in the Middle School and the Duke of Edinburgh

award.
- Coordinate, seek out and create opportunities for students to develop through enriching experiences.
- Work with the Learning Inclusion staff to ensure students’ diverse learning needs are met.

Student Wellbeing
- Oversee and lead the maintenance of the highest standards of student behaviour in the Middle School,

including monitoring, reviewing and implementing behaviour policies and procedures.
- Implement child safety principles and practices in the Middle School.
- Lead student welfare meetings as required, ensuring the Principal is kept informed of any students at risk.
