**Overview of Role**:
The Aboriginal Community Justice Report Program Manager will be employed to manage and prepare Aboriginal Community Justice Reports for criminal courts in Victoria (with a focus on Melbourne and La Trobe Valley) and provide related case work support. The reports provide the life history of the client and the community history of their mob, including culture, colonisation and current circumstances. They are prepared independently for criminal sentencing. The reports include a set of culturally appropriate and individually relevant options for community-based healing. The reports are strengths-focused and recognises the capacity of the client and Aboriginal community to articulate their own stories and be part of self-determining the sentence proposals.
The role is part a pilot project for Aboriginal Community Justice Reports that is funded by the Australian Research Council. It is the first of its kind in Australia and seeks to enhance Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ capacity to tell their story in courts and promote appropriate sentence options. The project is jointly implemented by the the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) and University of Technology Sydney (UTS), along with Griffith University, the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) and Five Bridges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation in Queensland.
The Program Manager will be directly supervised by the CEO of VALS, Nerita Waight and located at the VALS office. They will be joint-supervised by Professors Thalia Anthony and Larissa Behrendt and employed by UTS. The manager will receive training from Gladue Report writers located in Canada.
The day to day duties include managing referrals from lawyers, interviewing Aboriginal defendants within 8 weeks to prepare the Aboriginal Community Justice Report, coordinating case work referrals and proposed sentence options, communicating with family and support people of the client and researching the client’s Aboriginal community, culture and experiences of colonisation.

**Responsibilities and Duties**:
- Manage project referrals and timelines with lawyers and courts
- Provide weekly updates to supervisors on report and referral progress and respond to feedback;
- Prepare clients with prior information about the report process, including engagement with the research/evaluation component of the pilot, and obtain consent for participation
- Schedule, arrange and conduct interviews with clients, their families and support people, including providing them with prior information about the interview process and explaining what they can do to prepare for their interview;
- Conduct research on the client’s community, culture, Country, impacts of colonisation, ongoing racism and strengths
- Provide ongoing support to client and identify relevant referral pathways throughout preparation of report and for 8 weeks subsequent to court hearing
- Prepare concise, accurate and impartial reports based on evidence gathered from interviews, research and identified referral pathways / sentence options
