We save & change lives. At Children’s Cancer Institute we believe that a life should be long. Cancer cuts life short for hundreds of children every year, before they’ve even had a chance to make their mark. We aim to not only improve their quality of life but eradicate the cause of their pain.
As the only independent Medical Research institute in Australia focused on childhood cancer, our purpose is to translate and discover (through world class research), new treatments that will cure cancer and reduce the side effects in children and adolescents.
Choose to be part of a team that will nurture your talent, so you too can contribute to this purpose. Together, we can and we will cure all children of cancer. It’s not if. It’s when.
We are currently seeking a Cancer Biologist with Bioinformatics skills to work in our Embryonal Cancer Therapy and Prevention (ECTP) group. The overall strategy of the group is to dissect the mechanisms of embryonal cancer initiation and chemotherapy resistance of embryonal cancer. The group then works on diagnostic tools using single cell RNA and bioinformatic approaches to better treat embryonal cancer with combination therapies. This Cancer Biologist will perform research to identify chemo-resistance genes and combination therapy for embryonal cancer using single cell profiling to develop more effective combination therapies for childhood embryonal cancer treatment and prevention.
**As our Research Officer Bioinformatics your purpose will be to**:
- Develop and optimize algorithms to analyse, visualise and summarise single-cell RNA-sequencing/WES data from the SCRIPT study from pre
- and post-chemotherapy samples.
- Utilise your experience in molecular and cellular biology and single cell profiling
- Develop and implement algorithms using ‘omics data to identify chemo resistant clones, targeted agents, and potential combination therapies.
- Support research projects and grant administrative activities of the ECTP group
- Assess, understand and implement bioinformatics tools and generate bioinformatics pipelines
- Teach, assist and mentor scientists in the field of bioinformatics
- Get involved in any other tasks required by the group leader or delegated senior team members
- Show your demonstrated ability to design and conduct experiments independently as well as in a team environment
**To succeed you will have**
- A PhD in either Bioinformatics, Biology and Molecular Biology
- Strong expertise in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, and Programming
- Expertise in at least two of bash, R, python, or perl
- Experience in molecular and cellular biology
- Expertise in the interpretation and analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing
- Strong abilities in problem-solving and independent thinking
**We will support you to be your best with benefits that include but are not limited to**:
- Access to our ‘FlexBEST’ program - true flexibility from day 1
- Focus on employee wellbeing, including up to 5 gifted wellbeing days off (paid) per year
Join a group of dedicated people in a purpose-driven environment to achieve success and discover what it's like to look forward to coming to work every day and make a real difference.
