Mandatory Requirement - A degree in law from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or admission as a barrister or solicitor.
Key responsibilities of this role
- To provide high level analysis, advice and leadership on a range of complex and sensitive legal and justice related matters that have relevance and impact on the department, government more broadly, and a diverse range of stakeholders including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
- Provide high level strategic advice to the Director, Legal Affairs, senior management, the Director-General and Minister on a range of legal and justice related issues, including identifying risks and strategies to address them.
- Undertake, lead and manage complex legal related projects to ensure the strategic goals and objectives of the department and the Government are achieved.
- Develop, implement and lead robust and effective project management processes to support legal related matters.
- Undertake effective liaison and consultation with key colleagues, partners and stakeholders to support particular legal and justice related matters impacting the department.
- Prepare detailed analysis and advice, submissions (including Cabinet submissions), briefs, ministerial and departmental correspondence, answers to Parliamentary Questions on Notice, notes on Cabinet Submissions, requests for advice, legal related briefings and instructions to Crown Law and Counsel and other detailed advice as required for the Minister and senior departmental officers including the Director-General.
- Represent the department in various meetings and forums, both internal and external to the department, including with senior departmental officers, legal representatives, Crown Law and Counsel to progress legal related initiatives impacting the department.
- Provide strong and effective leadership to support the Legal Affairs Unit, including building and driving effective management and record keeping processes and mentoring, coaching and developing specialist project team members as required to meet departmental needs.
- Ensure compliance with departmental and whole-of-government guidelines, policies and procedures regarding the management and conduct of legal related matters always including acting to the highest professional and ethical standards and ensuring confidentiality.
- All staff are responsible for identifying, managing, and reporting risks relating to their work with the department.
