**Your role**

Are you passionate about improving the law? Do you enjoy taking a deep dive into complex legal and policy issues? Do you have exceptional skills in research, writing and project management? Can you think critically and creatively to solve legal and policy problems? If so, this role could be for you.

You will be working in a small team of highly skilled and experienced legal, policy and research professionals. Our team supports two independent statutory bodies: the NSW Law Reform Commission and the NSW Sentencing Council.

The LRC and the Council review laws at the request of the NSW Attorney General and provide recommendations for law reform.

The Law Reform Commission consists of a Chairperson (the Hon Tom Bathurst AC KC) and part-time Commissioners.

The Sentencing Council has 16 members, including retired judges, prosecutors, criminal defence lawyers, victims’ advocates, police and community representatives. The Chairperson is the Hon Peter McClellan AM KC.

Our team is part of the Policy, Reform and Legislation Branch (PRL), which sits within the Law Reform and Legal Service Division of the Department of Communities and Justice.

**What you’ll do**

Policy Officers in our team undertake a range of tasks, including:

- researching and analysing case law, legislation, academic literature and statistics
- working with colleagues to develop practical recommendations for law reform
- drafting clear and accurate content for consultation papers and reports
- facilitating stakeholder engagement, including by arranging consultations and managing submission processes, and
- other tasks as required to support the LRC and Council.

You will have excellent skills in research, analysis and problem-solving. Your writing is clear, compelling, and concise. You can manage competing priorities and perform under pressure. You value working in a small, collaborative team, but can also work independently. You can build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people and organisations. - Sound knowledge of Commonwealth and State law, government functions and the legislative process.
- Legal qualifications (Bachelor of Laws or equivalent)
- National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the _Disability Inclusion Act 2014_
- Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the _Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012_
