**Role**:
**Key roles and responsibilities of language assistants **(program guidelines from Department of Education)**:

- Participate in classes and activities as determined in consultation with their school¿s language assistant coordinator
- Participate in planning activities with their school¿s language teacher(s) or languages faculty
- Provide information and support for the delivery of their schools¿ languages program
- Assist with the development of resources, including teacher professional learning, to support the delivery of their school¿s language programs, and
- Participate in professional development activities provided by the Department.

- Assisting **Year 12** students to prepare for their oral exams
- Assisting **Year 11 **students to develop speaking skills
- Assisting **Year 10 **with their areas of improvement (i.e. grammar, speaking¿etc.)
- Assisting students in **junior levels** with their oral assessment tasks
- Assisting Japanese teachers to create reading materials
- Recording for listening tasks
- Creating cultural resources such as PP presentations and classroom display.
- Being a source of information (i.e. interviewee for students¿ survey)

4 days a week split 50-50 between Keilor Downs College and St Albans Secondary College

Days at each school; to be decided in Term 1 when timetables are available

**Location Profile**:
Keilor Downs College is a large single campus secondary school of approximately 1250 students, situated on the north-western edge of suburban Melbourne. Students and staff reflect the many different cultural backgrounds present within the local community.
- Vocational Major program, with excellent outcomes.

The college also strongly participates in the Brimbank VET cluster which further enhances the choices available to students by offering over 30 VET classes, with Cert II Hospitality, Cert II Sport & Recreation, and Cert II Building & Construction run on site.
- VM in Year 11.

A notable aspect of the college is its strong student support structures, with each individual student being known and supported academically and personally. This is achieved by both a House and a Home Group structure. Student engagement and management is based on four vertically structured Houses of Year 7-12 students. Each House has a unique identity and each is resourced with a Principal Class member, House Leader (Leading Teacher), three Student Coordinators and a Secondary Teacher Assistant. Home Group teachers are assigned to each new Year 7 Home Group and follow them through to Year 12. We also have very strong Wellbeing, Pathways and Inclusion Teams who offer a wide range of supports and programs to students.
