**About the role**

Reporting to the Managing Director, APAC, the Legal & Compliance Officer will be the key advisor on legal issues involving strategic and tactical legal and compliance initiatives in the ANZ region of Cover Genius. The role will be directly involved in complex business transactions and legal matters and assisting in negotiating critical partners and advising on insurance compliance and regulation. The Legal & Compliance Officer will also be the centralized coordinator with regards to the corporate, commercial and compliance structure of the legal function. The role will also be responsible for coordinating and managing (directly or indirectly) legal functions in other regions.

The role will be responsible for providing the business and internal stakeholders with effective legal advice whilst managing the internal legal function, and obtaining and/or overseeing the work of outside counsel across the business.

The role will also be responsible for supporting the business with compliance activities and the ongoing risk mitigation and navigation of the globally regulated insurance industry. The role may also be required to perform litigation on the company’s behalf or coordinate litigation and other legal matters handled by outside counsel.

**What your working week will involve**:

- Lead the development and management of the global Legal and Compliance Function
- Providing high quality, strategic and commercially focused legal and governance advice to your business partners, including effectively managing external counsel.
- Establishing effective relationships with business partners and peers to understand their business drivers and strategic priorities.
- Monitoring legislative/regulatory changes and provision of advice to proactively identify issues which may impact strategy, operational issues or business processes.
- Project manage all legal aspects of new projects and initiatives as required
- Support the risk and compliance frameworks across Cover Genius to ensure compliance and risk mitigation
- Support the insurance and claims teams with advise regarding insurance contracts and regulations
- Provide Company Secretariat services to main boards and committees
- Advise and communicate to the business on the impact of new legislation, governance and regulatory change

**What the ideal profile looks like**:

- Qualified Solicitor in Australia or NewZealand, ideally with a minimum 10 years of experience in the financial industry (either in a law firm or in-house)
- Depth of understanding in the global insurance and/or financial industry and applicable regulations, particularly Australia and New Zealand.
- Experience with corporate governance issues and corporate secretarial duties with demonstrated experience as a Company Secretary desirable
- Managed a legal function across multiple disciplines including commercial, risk and and compliance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of statutes, rules and regulations pertaining to businesses.
- Proficient understanding of business sensitivities and confidentiality
