As the public pathology provider in South Australia (SA), SA Pathology delivers quality pathology to medical practitioners, and public and private hospitals, through a linked system of laboratories across the state. Within SA Pathology, the Microbiology Infectious Diseases (MID) Directorate provides laboratory and clinical services in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases as well as teaching and undertaking research. The Directorate is well equipped with a highly-skilled workforce covering all sub-disciplines within the field of clinical microbiology. These attributes have been highlighted in a successful award-winning response during the CoVID-19 pandemic.

The MID Consultant's role is to support the clinical microbiology (CM) service provided to SA patients, and to contribute to test development and strategies for improving the service. The Consultant will provide advice on appropriate testing and interpretation of results, communicate significant results to requestors, provide advice on management and contribute to the provision of inpatient and outpatient services in Infectious Diseases (ID). This advertisement is for an 0.8 FTE ongoing position to replace a retiring consultant. In addition to working in the central laboratories at Royal Adelaide Hospital and Frome Road, some time may be spent working in the combined CM/ID service at the Flinders Medical Centre hence the preference for a dual CM/ID training. Alternate arrangements could be made for an FRCPA-only-trained specialist.

Essential requirements: Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent. Specialist Medical registration in Australia: Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (Clinical Microbiology).

Desirable characteristics include Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (Infectious Diseases)
