Senior Employment Law Specialist, Legal Services

Executive Level 1

ASIS is Australia’s overseas secret intelligence collection agency. Its mission is to protect and promote

Australia’s vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the Government.

Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international relations and

economic issues. It also contributes to Australia’s coordinated national efforts against terrorism,

proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as people smuggling.

**Role**
Are you looking for an exciting legal opportunity in the national security community? Joining a high

performing team, you will provide legal services and advice to ASIS, in accordance with government

and legislative requirements.

Key duties will include advice on employment law matters, as well as operational and corporate

matters, and conducting training for ASIS colleagues.

**Key Responsibilities and Tasks**
Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for the Executive Level 1 Employment Law Specialist,

Legal Services:
Assist the General Counsel and Deputy-General Counsels manage and deliver employment law

services for the Legal team, including but not limited to:

- Assisting with ASIS’s involvement with employment law matters, including internal and

external reviews;
- Advising on legal and policy matters including but not limited to the Intelligence

Services Act, SRC Act and WHS Act;
- Providing legal support to ASIS management in relation to the ASIS Workplace

Agreement negotiations and interpretation;
- Providing assistance and advice on a range of legal matters, including but not limited

to contracts, staff appeals, code of conduct reviews, entitlements, superannuation and

Comcare; and
- Developing and conducting training for ASIS staff regarding relevant legal issues.

Coordinate and maintain liaison relationships with external stakeholders, including the

Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), the Attorney-General’s Department, DFAT, Australian

Intelligence Community agencies, and other key external stakeholders.

Communicate effectively with senior management and other relevant sections within ASIS

about employment legal issues.

**Education, qualification and experience requirements**
The following qualifications are required:
Admission to practice law in an Australian State or Territory and eligibility to hold a restricted

practicing certificate in the ACT;
Experience in providing legal advice on employment law (either in public or private sector)

The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
Experience in employment, litigation, legal policy, commercial law;
Extensive experience providing in-house legal services; and

Experience in working within the public sector
