**Who we are**
The Polar Medicine Unit (PMU) is part of the People and Culture Branch and provides a comprehensive medical practice to Australia’s Antarctic Program. This is done by managing the recruitment and training of expedition medical personnel, the provision of medical supplies and 24/7 telemedical support for Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations, field programs, ships and aircraft, and the medical assessment of expedition personnel. The PMU also conducts practical research on human adaptation to extreme Antarctic environments. The PMU provides specialist remote and isolated medical support to a number of external state and Commonwealth agencies on a regular basis and has an international profile and reputation for its expertise amongst Antarctic nations.

**The Job**
Under general direction from the Chief Medical Officer, and in accordance with AAD and DCCEEW policies and procedures, the Practice Manager will provide management and leadership to the Polar Medicine Unit in the following areas:

- Business and Clinical Operations
- Financial Management
- Human Resource Management
- Professional Responsibility
- Risk management.

**Skills and Capabilities**
- Demonstrated high level administrative skills
- Planning, estimating and budgetary control for financial, staffing and asset management
- Proven ability to effectively manage contracts
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times and performing tasks that are sensitive in nature
- Demonstrated attention to detail in all areas of the position
- Proven ability to proactively manage a busy workload in a sometimes ambiguous environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A proven ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively as an efficient team leader and build productive working relationships with a range of stakeholders
- A demonstrated capacity to achieve results, prioritise work, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks with limited supervision and often under high operational tempo.

**Knowledge and experience**
- Ability to quickly learn new software programs in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated experience or understanding of medical environments, including medico/legal principles and medical terminology would be highly desirable.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation (PGPA Act) and the Commonwealth Procurement Framework would be highly desirable.

**Desirable qualifications**
- Degree or higher qualification in Business Administration or Management (or similar) and/or demonstrated experience in a team leadership or management role.
- Demonstrated experience or understanding of medical environments, including medico/legal principles and medical terminology is highly desirable
- Demonstrated experience or understanding of operational environments, particularly in managing and coordinating complex logistics and team dynamics.

**Eligibility**
- **Citizenship**:

- To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
- **Security Clearance** - This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
- **Pre-employment Check** - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
