**Community Safety Officer**
- Permanent full-time
- Band 6 - $88,774.74 (Excl. Super)
- Operate as an Authorised Officer in the delivery of Animal Management & Local Law Enforcement

**About the role**

Core responsibilities include:

- Encourage and maintain compliance through enforcement and negotiation and when required, prosecution of breaches against Acts, Regulations and Shire Local Laws.
- Meet customer needs and expectations by responding to and investigating customer reports and concerns relating to alleged breaches of Acts, Regulations or Shire Local Laws.
- Supervise and directly support staff when working weekends and after-hours or when otherwise required.
- Manage the operations of the Community Animal Shelter & Pound when working weekends or otherwise when required.
- Make independent decisions associated with day to day enforcement activities, having reference to Business Unit plans, Shire policy and procedures, codes of practice and delegated authorities.
- Provide clear and effective communication to Council, management, team members and the public in matters related to improving compliance with Acts, Regulations and Local Laws falling within the functions of the Community Safety Team.
- Prepare briefs of evidence, review briefs submitted by other officers and provide technical advice to ensure success of prosecutions, providing feedback and guidance when required.
- Attend courts, tribunals and other legal proceedings to act as Informant & Witness and, where appropriate, support legal representation on behalf of Council.
- Maintain clear case file details and system notations to ensure open and accountable reporting to management and external auditors.
- Compile and submit statistics to inform monthly and annual reports against Business Plan targets and legislative requirements.
- Liaise with other agencies including police, government departments and other councils, as required, in relation to enforcement activity, industry developments and staff training and development.
- Participate in community education and awareness programs to improve community understanding of legislation and local laws.
- Maximise the opportunity for achieving appropriate, acceptable and consistent outcomes through positive participation in teamwork programs and team relationships.
- Participate in team training opportunities and improve personal knowledge through researched solutions to problems.
- Regularly review systems, procedures, policies and guidelines to ensure they are in accordance with the appropriate Acts and Regulations and meet the needs of Shire and recommend changes where appropriate to the Community Safety Team Leader and Coordinators.

**Skills, experience, and other requirements**
- A thorough knowledge of local government regulatory and statutory requirements, investigation, resolution and enforcement processes, including relevant legislation.
- Capacity to mentor, coach and supervise staff in the regulatory functions.
- Capacity to prepare a brief and give evidence on matters in the Magistrates’ Court.
- Capacity to comprehend and contribute to developing policy and procedure documents.
- Ability to interrogate Shire databases and produce reports to ensure case deadlines are being met.
- Demonstrated ability in resolving complex/sensitive issues.
- Demonstrated ability to liaise and network with staff, external agencies and the pubic to facilitate successful resolution of routine cases.
- Ability to use administrative systems.
- Computer literacy skills, including functional use of Microsoft Office products and corporate databases.
- An Employee Working with Children Check.
- Preparedness to undertake an Australian Criminal History Check.
- A valid Driver’s Licence.
- Weekend work and after-hours availability and on-call duties.
