About the Role


The Community Safety Officer is responsible for responding to community concerns, investigating complaints, and gaining compliance with the Shire's Local Laws and State Government Acts and Regulations.

Reporting to the Team Leader Community Safety, the core responsibilities include:

  • Operate as an Authorised Officer in the delivery of Local Law Enforcement, Animal Management, Parking Compliance and other duties as required.
  • Investigate reports and concerns relating to alleged breaches of Acts, Regulations or Shire Local Laws in accordance with standard operating procedures and work protocols.
  • Conduct proactive inspections and patrols aimed at ensuring compliance with the Shire's Local Laws, as well as relevant Acts and Regulations, including inspections of commercial activities on footpaths; patrols of beaches and reserves to ensure compliance with dog controls; proactive inspections of overhanging vegetation and unsightly properties and inspections to follow up on unregistered pets.
  • Support the Community Safety Team by impounding contained cats and dogs.
  • Participate in the Shire's cat trapping program.
  • Work some weekends and public holidays throughout the year.

About You

Mandatory:

  • Ability to gather all relevant facts and information relating to an alleged breach of legislation.
  • Ability, with supervision and guidance, to investigate complaints and consider evidence relating to an alleged breach of legislation.
  • Computer literacy skills, including functional use of Microsoft Office products and corporate databases.
  • A basic knowledge of current legislation and regulations relating to this position.

Desirable:

  • Experience in the investigation of complaints, and enforcement of animal management, parking and local law compliance; or relevant experience in a regulatory or law enforcement role.
  • Experience in the handling and management of animals.
  • Tertiary or further education in a compliance or related discipline.
