Research Associate in Ocean and Atmosphere

Hobart, Australia University of Tasmania Full time

**Job no**: 500000

**Work type**: Full time

**Location**: Hobart

**Categories**: Research Focused

**Research Associate in Ocean and Atmosphere Mesoscale Systems**
- Opportunity to contribute and develop your expertise in Heatwaves in a changing climate
- Relocation assistance available for the successful appointee if required
- Full time, Fixed-Term for up to three (3) years, based in Hobart

**About the opportunity**

This position is fully funded by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century. The incumbent will contribute to and benefit from being a part of a supportive and vibrant Centre community which offers unparalleled networking and professional development opportunities.

The Centre is a major seven-year initiative funded by the Australian Research Council. It is a consortium of 24 partners led by Monash University in strong collaboration with The University of Melbourne, The University of New South Wales, The Australian National University, and the University of Tasmania.

This position forms an integral part of the Centre Project: Weather Systems in a Warmer World. In close collaboration with the Centre Project Modelling Science, the Research Associate will investigate the key processes and feedbacks that underpin the coupling of ocean and atmosphere mesoscale systems, and how these systems will be expected to change as our climate warms through the 21st century.

**What you’ll do**:

- Work within the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century, employed through and based at the partner node University of Tasmania within the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. The researcher will also work closely with researchers at Monash University and other partner nodes.
- Use fine scale coupled models developed and run within the Centre to investigate and understand ocean and atmosphere mesoscale systems and their coupling around Australia. This will include examining (1) the key processes and feedbacks in these systems, and (2) how these systems are expected to change as our climate warms through the 21st century.
- Use fine scale models to understand the influence of mesoscale systems on the atmosphere and ocean circulation, vertical structure, heating, and persistence beyond the lifetime of these systems.
- Questions include: How sensitive is the representation of mesoscale ocean and atmosphere systems to model resolution? How will ocean and atmosphere mesoscale system tracks and intensities change in a warming world? How are the frequency and lifetimes of these systems expected to change in a warming world?
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

**What we’re looking for**:

- A PhD or equivalent in fluid dynamics, physical oceanography, atmospheric science, applied mathematics or an equivalent field.
- Demonstrable knowledge of weather processes (atmosphere/ocean physics and/or dynamics).
- Experience in analysing atmosphere or ocean weather systems in model simulations.
- Programming experience in python, MATLAB, or other high-level language.
- Evidence of research that has produced high-quality publications and presentations at conferences.
- Capacity to work effectively both independently and in a team, as well as with colleagues at other Centre nodes and partner organisations.
- Commitment to equity and diversity principles and to contributing to an inclusive culture in the workplace.

**Salary details**

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $118,769 comprising base salary within the range of $78,499 to $101,512 plus 17% superannuation.
