About the opportunity
The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is a world-class centre of excellence for innovative, relevant, and globally distinctive marine research and education at the University of Tasmania. The Data Management section within IMAS is responsible for management of data and information systems. This responsibility extends to including the formulation of relevant policy and strategies, conceptualisation and development of information systems, deploying and managing data and metadata repositories, and providing advice and support to the IMAS Directorate, staff, students, partners and major collaborations hosted at the University (e.g. SMRCA, NESP, ACEAS, AAPP).
The Senior Research Data Analyst provides a comprehensive information service related to data holdings at IMAS and partner organisations. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining best practice, end to end data workflows for research data hardware and software infrastructure. Additionally, the position carries out associated curation protocols and practices.
The Research Data Analyst works closely with and provides expert advice to researchers from IMAS and partner organisations on the management, analytics, code optimisation, visualisation, and publishing of data collected or generated. The incumbent work closely with other institutional data and digital research service staff from the University’s Information Technology Services and partner organisations including the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS), Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC), Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), and the National Computing Infrastructure (NCI).
What you’ll do:
Work with and provide expert advice to researchers across IMAS and partner organisations, continuing to ensuring the adoption of best data management practice, including adherence to FAIR principles and compliance with the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research, and practically support researchers through the design and oversight of data workflows from concept to completion. Provide training and education to researchers regarding data management best practice, and relevant policies and procedures. Work closely with relevant IT and data management staff from the University and partner organisations such as IMOS, AADC, other AODN partners, OBIS, ARDC and NCI to ensure operational availability of complex IT hardware and software infrastructure. Support external users and stakeholders in accessing data published at IMAS. Provide support to relevant computer and data committees. Develop data visualisation tools, where possible based on existing infrastructure and data platforms. Provide expertise in managing and manipulating research datasets and in online SQL databases. Represent IMAS at relevant national and international meetings and travel to national data centres as necessary.What we’re looking for:
A tertiary qualification in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and/or education training. An advanced understanding of best practice in data management including the FAIR data principles and management of sensitive data. Extensive experience in supporting and administering IT infrastructure and applications, preferably in a marine research facility. Extensive knowledge and experience working with large datasets and associated storage environments including SQL databases. Demonstrated experience and understanding of web applications, their design, development, and deployment.Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $126,637 comprising base salary within the range of $98,473 to $108,237 plus 17% superannuation.
