About the opportunity
The Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP) brings together government and non-government entities to deliver and lead a significant part of the national Antarctic science program. The partnership is led by the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and includes the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, Geoscience Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology, the Tasmanian State Government and Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System.
The Senior Technical Officer – Plankton will be a member of AAPP Project 7 Ecosystems team and will provide a lead role in:
Supporting data management across a range of research projects and helping to build a comprehensive database of Southern Ocean zooplankton traits; and Managing laboratory assets for the team and help to curate the zooplankton archiveThe Senior Technical Officer – Plankton will participate in a major marine science cruise in the Southern Ocean, supporting world-first live experiments on zooplankton and krill.
What you’ll do:
Support critical physiological tolerance experiments of Southern Ocean zooplankton Contribute to database of key zooplankton traits Build energetics and biomarker database, including running more assays Develop biomass size spectra for the broader Southern Ocean Contribute to outputs from the broader teamWhat we’re looking for:
A minimum of a Masters degree in a relevant field, for example, marine science, or environmental science. Proficiency in computer programs, especially R, coupled with the capability to conduct data handling and familiarity with statistical modelling. Demonstrated experience working with live plankton, particularly the husbandry and handling of fragile organisms such as copepods and larval krill. Demonstrated experience with instrumentation including microscopes (light, compound, SEM), ZooScan, ICP-MS. Excellent organisational skills and ability to work in a team environment, including the ability to lead. Demonstrated experience and ability to work independently on a research voyage for extended periods.Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $113,029 comprising base salary within the range of $89,091 to $96,606 plus 17% superannuation.
