**The Role**
The Assistant Director Environment is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex to very complex environmental management work within an integrated workforce. They require an in-depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence and Navy’s mission and policy requirements.

The Assistant Director Environment will exercise a considerable degree of independence and will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. They will engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic or operational outcomes for Navy and Defence.

The Assistant Director Environment will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.

The Directorate of Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, occupational hygiene, environment protection, and compliance and risk management systems. We are an integrated workforce which includes military and civilian personnel with highly specialised skills and deep maritime experience.

Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) is responsible for developing, sustaining and providing advice on both the Navy Safety Management System and Navy Environment Management Systems. This ensures they meet accountabilities for Chief of Navy (CN) and Capability Manager, and involves harmonising the legislative requirements in the maritime context.
- Deliver environmental management activities in accordance with Navy environmental policies and procedures and relevant legislation.
- Lead, plan and manage Navy’s environmental programs and systems.
- Review and implement Navy’s environmental legislative obligations to ensure compliance with Defence and Navy's environmental management responsibilities.
- Generate and implement innovative environmental management policies and programs.
- Liaise and influence relationships with stakeholders to represent and communicate Navy’s environmental requirements.
- Motivate and mentor team members in order to deliver Navy and Defence environmental objectives.
- Employ informed judgement and advice on environmental management issues.
- Analyse, prioritise and initiate improvements to business practices to further Defence and Navy's environmental policy objectives.
