A little bit about us

The Online Safety, Media and Platforms Division provides advice to Government on policy issues that affect the lives of all Australians, including broadcast TV, news media, online safety and digital platforms. We cover a broad range of issues, and lead the development of policy and regulatory responses which:
- Ensure all Australians can connect to media and online services safely-
- Foster access and inclusiveness and underpin sustainable economic benefits to the community-
- Protect and promote Australian news, culture, community identity and media diversity to support and inform democracy and civil engagement-

We are seeking talented and enthusiastic policy professionals to join our Online Safety and Classification branches.

The
**Online Safety Branch** develops and monitors the online safety framework, within a rapidly changing digital environment, to prevent harm and enable all Australians to connect to online services safely and confidently.

We provide advice to the Minister for Communications on a broad range of online safety issues including cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and policy and reporting oversight of the online safety regulator (the eSafety Commissioner).

We are interested in both emerging harms and emerging solutions, and our advice balances harms and freedoms.

The
**Classification Branch** develops and monitors the National Classification Scheme to ensure all Australians have access to trusted and reliable classification information to guide their media choices.

We provide advice to the Minister for Communications on a broad range of classification policy issues, conduct regular research to ensure that classification policy and classification decisions are informed by community standards, and support the activities of the Classification Board and the Classification Review Board.

This recruitment process will also be used to establish a merit list for future EL1 opportunities in the Online Safety, Media and Platforms Division and the department, both ongoing and non-ongoing.

What will you do?

You will work on some of the Government’s most challenging, topical and interesting policy challenges. Online safety is a high profile and cutting-edge policy area. Our branch works to address the challenges of keeping Australians safe in a global digital landscape with research; policy development; grants; and engaging with the eSafety Commissioner.

There is an exciting and complex work program ahead to help shape the future of Australia’s National Classification Scheme to respond to the challenges of a modern media environment. This work will require engagement across industry (including video gaming, cinema and streaming video on demand sectors), community groups and with state and territory governments (who are joint partners in the National Classification Scheme).
