**About the Role**
The University of Melbourne is seeking a proactive postdoctoral Research Fellow to join its Department of Biomedical Engineering as part of the Moonshot Research and Development Program funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The project's objective is to develop advanced machine learning algorithms to decode neural information from intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings and enhance the accuracy and reliability of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The Research Fellow will conduct research in deep learning and other cutting-edge machine learning methods, analyse recorded signals, and prepare research outcomes for publication in conferences and journals.
The role may require independent travel to Japan for 1-3 months each year to collaborate with partners at Osaka University.
Responsibilities include:
- Contribute towards the research effort of the team and develop research expertise and deliver against research objectives in a timely manner.
- Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff, conduct internationally competitive research resulting in publications in high impact journals.
- Undertake occasional teaching, tutorials, marking and laboratory duties as required by the Department/School.
- Engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.

**About You**
To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently with mínimal supervision while prioritizing tasks effectively. You should possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex research concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Additionally, you should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
You will also have:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent
- Strong background in machine learning specifically deep neural networks
- Excellent programming skills
