About the position
An exciting opportunity exists for a talented and motivated researcher with a strong interest in tumour immunology to join the Neuro-Oncology Translational Radiobiology group, led by the Senior Research Clinical Fellow. This group operates within the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory under the Personalised Oncology Division at WEHI.

About the lab
The Neuro-Oncology Translational Radiobiology group (NOTR) is a newly formed group within the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory. NOTR is led by Dr Joseph (Joe) Sia (radiation oncologist, clinician-scientist), and is focussed on addressing the growing clinical burden of brain metastases. We approach this by deeply studying the immunobiology of brain metastases using patient samples and pre-clinical models, as well as researching how radiation therapy - an established and integral treatment for brain cancers - can create therapeutic windows to leverage with immunotherapy for brain metastases. Our group operates within the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory, a young lab led with interdisciplinary skills at its core. Co-led by Dr Jim Whittle (neurooncologist), Dr Saskia Freytag (bioinformatician) and Dr Sarah Best (fundamental biology), the Brain Cancer Research Laboratory drives research projects with a strong multidisciplinary focus. Our research aims to develop improved diagnostics, treatments and pre-clinical models to ultimately improve the survival of patients with brain cancer Our research combines clinical and pre-clinical models with advanced genomics technologies and bioinformatic analyses to improve the cancer therapeutic landscape (Nature Communications 2019, Cell Metabolism 2022, Cancer Discovery 2019, Clinical Cancer Research 2020).
This position will suit a self-motivated individual with proven project management, excellent oral and written communication, and reporting skills.
Key selection criteria
Personal qualities- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work constructively within a team environment- Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, new methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchers- Ability to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachable
Experience and qualifications- A relevant doctoral qualification with a strong background in cancer immunology- An excellent academic record and achievements- Demonstrated ability and potential for excellence and productivity in research- Research experience that has resulted in publications, conference papers or reports- Proven interpersonal and collaborative skills in achieving research outcomes
Knowledge and skills- Cancer immunology techniques- Experience working with mouse models, ideally of brain tumours- Experience with single cell omics sequencing is desirable- Experience working with and coordinating patient material is desirable- Management of research projects and coordination with multiple stakeholders is desirable- Project experience involving the analysis of large datasets is desirable
