Founded in 2001, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. About The Role
The Payroll Officer is responsible for delivering high-quality, timely, and accurate payroll services for the ASRC. The Payroll Officer supports the financial stewardship of the organisation by overseeing payroll processes for the ASRC, including salary packaging, superannuation, PAYG, and workers' compensation reconciliations. Additionally, the role is responsible for maintaining provisions for Annual Leave, Long Service Leave, Portable Long Service Leave, and other employee-related benefits.
The incumbent is responsible for posting accounting journals and accruals in the accounting system and conducting monthly payroll liability and expense account reconciliations. They also prepare accurate monthly reports on staff-related metrics, with a focus on leave reporting. Strong collaboration with the business, especially the People & Culture department, is crucial to ensure that the workflows for these processes are fit for purpose, allowing the business to operate efficiently and comply with established policies and governance settings.
The role actively engages in enhancing payroll systems and improving the accuracy and efficiency of the payroll function. Additionally, the Payroll Officer assists the Finance team with bank reconciliations, ad-hoc project tasks, and provides support to team members as needed.
About You
- Proven experience as a standalone Payroll Officer, including expertise in interpreting Industry Awards.
- Proven skills in using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Highly developed customer service skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated understanding of administrative functions and office practices
- Ability to work independently as well as co-operatively
- Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and experience levels.
- Numeracy skills
- Exceptional attention to detail
- A strong understanding of accounting concepts including accruals, processing journals, basic understanding of Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet and undertaking reconciliations
- Ability to analyse and problem solve
- Organisation and prioritisation skills
- Initiative and proactiveness, in particular in relation to process improvements
Lived experience of seeking asylum in Australia is highly desirable. Knowledge of policy and issues impacting on people seeking asylum in Australia as well as previous experience working within a not-for-profit environment, would also be advantageous.
