**About the National Measurement Institute **:We are the Australian Government’s national authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services, and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally, and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.

We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our employees bring. We’re committed to giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate, contribute and progress. Our values and behaviours centre on being adaptable, innovative, accountable, strategic, inclusive and influential.

**About the branch **:The Physical Metrology branch leads the development, maintenance, and dissemination of Australia’s peak physical measurement standards. We provide the assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums.

Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services, branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This supports research, process improvements, product optimisation and better measurement practice.

**About the Acoustics, Ultrasound, and Vibration Standards Team **:The Acoustic, Ultrasound and Vibration (AUV) Standards team develops and maintains Australia’s most accurate measurement standards for acoustics and vibration. In our laboratories, we use leading technology to measure dynamic pressure for sound-in-air, and for oscillatory and impulsive velocity and acceleration for vibration. Our work supports key industry users in areas such as Advanced Manufacturing, Road and Rail transport, Aerospace, Defence and Defence Contractors, Mining, Health and Safety, Energy transmission and Production, Geoscience and Exploration.

Through our research and development activities, we ensure that we have the capability to meet Australia’s needs now and into the future. Current projects include the development of new standards for infrasound (e.g., to support measurement of sound from wind farms), blast overpressure (mining), high-intensity shock, dynamic pressure, and new optical-acoustic standards.

**The opportunity**:
You will have the opportunity to grow your technical skills and competency, working within an accredited, world-class scientific organisation that champions equality and inclusiveness and is highly focused on innovation, quality of the services that we provide, and on professional development.

If you are looking for a career in laboratory operations, with opportunities for career progression and professional growth, this position may be the ideal entry point for you.

**What’s in it for you?**:
NMI values continuous learning and is committed to supporting staff in reaching their full potential. You will have the opportunity to:

- Enter a career track in measurement science.
- Gain experience in a wide range of measurement instrumentation, digital acquisition, signal analysis, control software, and measurement system design.

- Receive mentoring from world-leading experts in measurement science.
- Develop your potential through our values and behaviours scheme, selecting practical learning opportunities within the wider Australian Public Service development programme that meet your needs, career stage and role.
