The Treehouse4Two (TH42) Retreat Program is a grant funded program that will improve the lives of people living with Dementia and their carers by increasing early access to Respite and support services.
Treehouse4Two Retreats provides:
- Access to a person-centred program for both carers and people living with dementia across the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn Shires of regional Victorian.
- A wellbeing and education focus in a peer learning environment to support participants to live well at home for as long as possible; improve their quality of life, reduce the physical and psychosocial burden of caring; and delay early entry into permanent aged care.
- The opportunity to build carer knowledge, skills and capability in their role as a carer for someone living with dementia.
- Increased awareness of the benefits of respite for people living with dementia and their carers
- Support for the person living with dementia to continue to live well.
Program Overview
- Consists of both structured and unstructured activities for both carer education and people diagnosed with dementia and adapts along with group dynamics and individual needs.
- Operates over a 3 day / 2-night period and is held monthly with approximately 6 couples (the carer participates in an Education program and the person diagnosed with dementia participates in a wellbeing program). All participants come together for meals and couples have their own accommodation on site.
The Carer Education and Support Facilitator is a pivotal to ensure the individual education and support needs of carers are met in the context of a small group setting. The role links with the Engagement Facilitators to ensure continuity of support approaches for the person living with dementia and is a role model for carers of appropriate communication and behaviour.
This role delivers the carer education sessions including topics about dementia, physical and cognitive changes, grief and loss, self-care, respite options and other resources/supports available; and encourages peer learning, the sharing of stories and experiences through open and supportive discussions.
The role contributes to creating a safe and warm environment for Retreat participants and walks alongside participants in their journey during the Retreat.
