The Team Member provides expert forensic support involving the application of crime scene discipline expertise to investigations across AFP Outcomes 1 (National and International Policing), 2 (ACT Policing) and 3 (Specialist Protective Services and International Policing Missions).
The Eastern Command Crime Scenes team is located in Sydney, NSW and primarily supports National and International Policing, which involves detecting, collecting, recording and interpreting evidence related to a range of offences including drug importations, child protection, cybersecurity and counter-terrorism operations.
As a Crime Scene Investigator, you will need to be both flexible and mobile as well as able to deploy both nationally and internationally as required.
Forensic team members also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual. What will you do?The role provides expert forensic support involving the application of crime scene discipline expertise to investigations. The Crime Scene Investigator role includes:
- Provide crime scene support, involving the application of crime scene discipline expertise to investigations within a team environment.
- Plan and conduct forensic crime scene examination/analysis into a range of crime types of varying complexity, both in the field and in the laboratory.
- Provide accurate, professional, expert forensic evidence to the courts.
- Provide accurate, professional, expert forensic advice, to investigators and other internal/external stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development, delivery and/or assessment of forensic investigation training and capacity building activities for internal and/or external clients.
- Contribute to operational briefings and debriefings as required.
- Contribute to the maintenance of the Quality System including completing administrative and technical reviews of relevant casefiles.
- Contribute to the research, development and innovation on the Crime Scene portfolio.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment.
- Contribute to a wider understanding of the role of forensic operations within the AFP.
- Undertake a mentor role for developing team members as the opportunity arises.
- Maintain sub-discipline area of expertise.
- Undertake tasks and projects as identified by the Crime Scenes Leadership Team.
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- The member will be required to undertake an initial psychological assessment with on-going periodic assessments as identified by AFP Management
- Formal qualifications and/or contemporary experience and knowledge in a relevant science/forensic/technical discipline.
- This role is located in Sydney, NSW and applicants are expected to be based in Sydney.
- Positions may be filled at the AFP Band 3 to 5 levels, within the AFP Forensics Broadband 3 - 6, depending upon the skills and experience of the successful candidate. Please note final determination of the role and band level you are found suitable for is at the discretion of the panel.

- This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement , an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
