We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

The Role

Illawarra Primary School is seeking highly skilled and dedicated Special Needs Education Assistants to join our talent pool. Suitable applicants should contribute to an environment characterised by whole-school approaches, a commitment to professional learning, teamwork, and a willingness to contribute to our school community.

Suitable applicants will assist teachers in delivering engaging, individualised learning programs for students with diverse needs. This includes students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and those impacted by trauma. An understanding of Trauma Informed Practice is highly beneficial. Education Assistants are expected to support student independence, wellbeing, and participation through inclusive strategies. They play a key role in assisting with personal care, emotional regulation, and health needs, while promoting positive behaviour and social-emotional development.

Applicants should be able to work flexibly across the school week with a range of students, adapting to changing needs and priorities. They should display excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. Strong collaboration with teachers and families is highly valued, as the role requires active participation in the implementation and review of individual education and behaviour support plans. A positive, professional attitude and the ability to build strong, respectful relationships with students and colleagues are key attributes for success in this role

This pool will be used to fill roles across K-6, including within our inclusive education and intervention programs.

Eligibility

• be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
• obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start; and
• consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education's Screening Unit before you start.

Your application should include:

• A CV of up to three (3) pages outlining your employment history and professional learning summary relevant to this position
  • A two to three (2-3)page statement addressing the following selection criteria as outlined in the attached JDF
    • Demonstrate good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
    • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
    • Demonstrate good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
    • Demonstrate ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
    • Demonstrate ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
