About This Opportunity

The First-Year Coordinator is a Teaching Focused (TF) role within the TC Beirne School of Law that is responsible for the transition of commencing law students into their legal studies at university. In this role, you will lead the development of curriculum and pedagogy for the First-Year Skills Program (FYSP), manage the strategic operations of the FYSP, and teach into the first-year law courses, including the FYSP.

You will have expertise in curricula, pedagogy, and assessment that enables student learning, and you will play a particular role through activities that shape the culture of teaching excellence at UQ.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching: Develop and deliver first-year law courses including FYSP, engage in curriculum design, coordinate courses, assess students, provide academic counselling, and adhere to university teaching rules.

  • Research: Lead the development of the FYSP through consultation with relevant stakeholders, manage the strategic and day-to-day operations of the FYSP, engage in educational collaborations and the scholarship of teaching and learning with particular focus on the first year in law.

  • Supervision: Provide academic support and advice to students, develop a plan for first-year activities, support the orientation program for commencing students, identify and consult with students 'at risk' based on their engagement metrics, present relevant data on first-year activities and evaluate their effectiveness in supporting student success.

  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Applicants should possess a degree in law and relevant specialist qualifications and experience in teaching and learning.

Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • Evidence of high-quality teaching in the discipline across a variety of settings, including small and large groups with course coordination responsibilities;

  • An emerging profile of teaching impact in the discipline and/or emerging profile in education research in the discipline;

  • Participation in projects that improve curriculum, pedagogy, or assessment practices of others, with funded projects being particularly desirable and/or a record of contributing successfully to applications for research funds;

  • Participation in curriculum development at the program and/or course level in the discipline area;

  • Well-developed level communication, interpersonal, and consultative skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in teaching and learning; and

  • A profile of professional expertise that complements and/or supplements the expertise that currently exists within the School, Faculty and/or broader University.

This is a full-time position however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated. It is not possible to conduct one's teaching remotely in this role. Attendance at campus for teaching, and the discharge of other duties as directed, is expected.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check, criminal check etc.
