Role Overview
This is a highly technical, senior-level role leading protection system design for HV substations and Terminal stations. You'll drive protection and control engineering tasks across brownfield and greenfield substation projects - including network projects, hyper-scale data centre, and renewable connections - ensuring configuration files, settings, schematics, and fault analysis are executed at the highest quality.
This role is not a general project engineer role. It is pure protection and control - ideal for someone with deep technical acumen and the ability to work autonomously across the entire lifecycle of protection system design engineering and implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Technical Delivery of protection system design tasks
  • Perform power system fault modelling, setting calculations, and QA review
  • Provide technical assurance, particularly for fault-level modelling and relay schemes
  • Interface with site teams remotely (phone/Teams), where required
  • Manage and review internal relay/drawing databases (training provided)

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in Electrical utilities HV substation protection and control design (brownfield and greenfield)
  • Familiarity with relay configuration platforms (Schweitzer, GE, Siemens, etc.)
  • Competency with fault modelling software (e.g., PSSE or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of Victorian regulatory standards and compliance frameworks
  • Experience in zonal substations and terminal stations (not building services or Manufactuing machinery)
  • Capable of quality assurance and team mentoring
  • NER registration and sign-off capability mandatory
  • Australian-recognised engineering qualification essential

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 8-15+ years' experience in protection and control (substation-focused)
  • Has led or guided other engineers technically (even in a flat structure)
  • Strong analytical thinker with attention to technical detail
  • Confident communicator (written + verbal) and process-oriented
  • Melbourne-based, 3 days in CBD office
