About the Role

Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation that aims to empower Aboriginal people to take control of their individual, family, and community health and wellbeing needs through our clinical and community programs.

Our main services are in Wellington, Dubbo, Western Sydney, Penrith, Nepean, and Blue Mountains, and we provide outreach services to other towns and communities through our regional programs.

Role overview: We are looking for a motivated and culturally respectful Dental Assistant to join our friendly and professional dental team at WACHS. This role plays a vital part in supporting the delivery of high-quality, culturally safe oral health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

As a Dental Assistant, you will work closely with dentists and oral health therapists to provide chairside assistance, maintain infection control standards, prepare and sterilise instruments, and ensure a smooth and welcoming environment for clients. You will also support community-based and outreach programs that aim to improve oral health outcomes and promote preventive care.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to the clinician in patient care including the preparation of all equipment, instruments and materials for each dental procedure; instrument transfer and moisture control; management of the patient\'s well-being; providing appropriate oral health care and/or post-operative instruction.
  • Maintain a high standard of infection control in accordance with Australian Dental Association and Dental Board of Australia guidelines and NSW Health standards, Oral Health Policies including; compliance with the correct use PPE, correct disposal of waste and reprocessing and sterilisation of instruments.
  • Ensure quality data management through the correct use of Oral Health digital information systems and patient records.
  • Be actively involved in mandatory, recommended and new systems training as required.
  • Attend Meetings as appropriate, including monthly department/unit meetings and other meetings and participate in oral health promotion activities and preventative programs.
Selection Criteria
  • Recent, adequate experience as a Dental Assistant.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist the clinician in a four-handed environment, with a variety of dental procedures including general and specialised care.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effective infection control procedures in all aspects of Dental Assisting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy in dental charting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • The ability to work in a large, multidisciplinary team, and be able to liaise effectively with a range of individuals including fellow health care workers and the general public.
  • Excellent organisational, time-management and problem- solving skills.
Mandatory compliance requirements
  • Certificate III in Dental Assisting or recognised equivalent/current enrolment in the course.
