About this role:

At Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, we have a simple mission – Personal and Compassionate Care Every Time. Volunteers help to enhance the patient experience and complement the work of paid members of staff.

Volunteers assist the team in completing basic administration activities which ensure that the department can deliver services on time and effectively. Volunteers here will not be in direct contact with patients.

Commitment: A minimum of one 3-hour shift per week, on a Monday

Any 3 hours between 9am and 4pm

What are the key tasks?

  • Check in with your supervisor Mary Epilepsy Nurse to gain an understanding of key tasks that need to be completed ensure epilepsy nurse service is running smoothly and upcoming events.
  • Listening to answerphone messages and making a list of patients to respond to
  • To call patients if necessary to confirm their messages – often they do not leave an NHS number and we need this to investigate their need
  • Checking appointments for patients if they call
  • Keeping the epilepsy alerts up to date
  • Sorting out post and sending letters out to patients, writing envelopes
  • Making up patient safety information packs – specific age groups
  • Requesting more packs from other agencies when stock is low
  • To send out specific information to patients – e.g anxiety information or memory information
  • Assist with various data bases – different patient cohorts, e.g transition, maternity to ensure appointments are within pathways – under Mary's supervision
  • Calling patients to remind them of appointments
  • Assisting with booking appointments for epilepsy patients either to neurology or to Mary's epilepsy clinic
  • Sending any specific emails as directed by Mary – e.g. may need a discharge summary if patient has gone to another ED
  • To upload to Evolve and med Rec as required
  • To use Careflow to monitor whether epilepsy patients have been admitted or whether their ED admission was seizure related

Essential requirement/commitment:

  • Volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • All Volunteers will require a DBS check.
  • Participation in the training relevant to your role and confidential discussion of any reasonable adjustments required to meet your needs.
