Building on our established international reputation, we are seeking a highly skilled Head of Programs to lead the delivery of complex, large-scale projects aligned with the AAO Strategic Plan 2025-2034: Bridging Eras.
The RoleAs the Head of Programs, you will oversee a diverse portfolio of complex, technical projects in instrumentation, software, and data systems. You will ensure these projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards of quality and scientific impact. You will lead a team of project professionals, embed best-practice project management across AAO, drive continuous improvement, and provide insights into program performance and organizational health.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing programs and projects from inception to delivery across budgets exceeding $10M.
- Driving a culture of project management excellence, embedding relevant PMO practices, and ensuring operational rigour.
- Building strong collaborative relationships across a matrixed environment of scientists, engineers, academics, and industry partners.
- Overseeing resource allocation, quality assurance, and contract management.
- Leading stakeholder engagement and negotiations with internal collaborators, external clients, and international partners.
- Developing business cases, tracking progress against milestones, and proactively mitigating risk, in collaboration with the AAO Leadership Team.
You are an experienced program and project management leader with a background in astronomical instrumentation or a related complex technical/scientific industry. With demonstrated PMO experience, you bring a strong ability to operate in matrixed environments, collaborate effectively across discipline areas, drive a culture of excellence and continual improvement, and deliver outcomes in high-stakes, multi-stakeholder contexts.
- A postgraduate qualification in management or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- A proven track record in successfully managing large, complex technical programs and projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, influence, and manage high-performing and diverse teams.
- Agility and adaptability to navigate complex challenges with professionalism and rigour.
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
