Construction and Maintenance Apprentice – Illawarra Mercury

You will embark on a program of learning and skills development as an active participant across our construction, maintenance and asphalt teams, completing general labouring duties including concreting, repair and patching potholes, signage and street furniture maintenance, stormwater drainage and general maintenance on Council assets. The apprenticeship leads to a Cert III in Civil Construction (General) with practical on‑the‑job training supported by TAFE.

Open to both school leavers and mature age applicants eligible for admission to the Cert III in Civil Construction (General). On successful completion you will have the Cert III in Civil Construction and four years of practical experience in civil construction tasks across local government. The program covers theoretical and practical requirements of on‑the‑job and off‑the‑job training.

Location: Services Depot, Oak Flats. Our Construction team is inclusive and supportive, delivering services for the community. The Council's Cadet, Apprentice and Trainee (CAT) Program aims to grow local government skills via job opportunities, training and professional development in line with external tertiary study. CAT participants receive ongoing mentoring while completing a national qualification.

Benefits and conditions:

  • Temporary Full time up to 4 years (or for the duration of the apprenticeship) – 38 hours per week with a 9 Day Fortnight
  • Salary range from $584.20 per week (16 years old) to $803.30 per week (18+), plus 11.5% superannuation
  • On‑the‑job training; compulsory course costs paid by Council
  • TAFE attendance paid; great culture and a progressive team
