Overview

Start your career in carpentry - maintenance & repair. As a Carpentry Apprentice, you'll learn the trade through hands-on maintenance and repairs to keep our city's assets safe, functional and in working order.

Support the Building Maintenance team. This role is based at the Oak Flats Services Depot and reports to the Team Coordinator, Building Maintenance. You will complete a Certificate III in Carpentry course at Shellharbour TAFE to gain and develop practical knowledge and skills associated with the presentation of our city. This opportunity is open to school leavers, mature age applicants and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Carpentry. Note: funding confirmation is required; successful applicants will commence in January 2026 based on funding being confirmed.

This is part of the Council's Cadet, Apprentice and Trainee (CAT) Program, which provides ongoing training, guidance and support while completing a nationally recognised qualification.

Responsibilities
  • Gain practical skills in maintenance and repair work (not new construction), supporting the Building Maintenance team.
  • Repair doors, windows and fixtures; replace damaged timber; install and repair parkland furniture and equipment; fencing; and minor concreting works.
  • Use hand and power tools; read maintenance plans; work safely in occupied buildings.
  • Participate in on-the-job and off-the-job training as part of the Certificate III in Carpentry, gaining four years of practical experience and broader skills across maintenance and city presentation teams.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Open to school leavers, mature age applicants, and/or those who have already commenced their Certificate III in Carpentry.
  • Completion of a Pre-placement Medical examination is required.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card) prior to commencement.
Benefits and Details
  • Temporary full-time up to 4 years (or duration of apprenticeship).
  • 38 hours per week with access to a 9 Day fortnight.
  • Salary range from $601.70 per week (for a 16-year-old) to $827.40 per week (for someone 18+), plus 12% superannuation.
  • On-the-job training; compulsory course costs paid by Council; approved leave to attend TAFE.
