At Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Engineer to lead our engineering team and ensure the seamless operation of our five-star waterfront hotel.This is a rare opportunity to take the next step in your leadership career—overseeing the performance, efficiency, safety, and sustainability of a landmark property in one of Australia's most desirable destinations.The Role As Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the Engineering Department.
This includes overseeing the maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, and building services systems, ensuring compliance with fire life safety standards, and implementing energy conservation initiatives.You will play a critical role in protecting the hotel's assets, supporting sustainability efforts, and driving continuous improvement, all while leading and developing a high-performing team.Key ResponsibilitiesLead all aspects of property maintenance and facilities management across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and building systems Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs and long-term capital plans Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety standards and local regulations, including fire life safety protocols Coordinate external contractors for repairs, refurbishments, and infrastructure upgrades Monitor and manage energy usage and implement cost-saving sustainability strategies Maintain departmental budgets, manage inventory, and report on key operational data Provide leadership, coaching, and development for all Engineering team members Collaborate with hotel leadership on new projects and operational improvements About YouTo be successful in this role, you will bring:A Diploma in Building Services, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering A minimum of 8 years' experience in a similar role, with at least 4 years in an executive engineering position within a luxury hotel or resort Strong technical knowledge and experience across engineering systems, building compliance, and asset management Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire and manage a high-performing team A detailed understanding of fire life safety requirements within the hospitality industry A hands-on, solutions-focused approach and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders Excellent organisational and reporting skills, with a commitment to continuous improvement What We Offer The opportunity to join a world-renowned brand with strong values and a global presence A collaborative and inclusive leadership team On-site duty meals and dry cleaning allowance Discounted city car parking Generous accommodation and dining discounts within the Shangri-La Group Access to Shangri-La Academy for continued professional development A prime CBD location on the Cairns waterfront Please note: Only candidates with full and ongoing Australian working rights will be considered for this position.Apply NowIf you are ready to lead with purpose and elevate your engineering career within a world-class luxury hotel, we invite you to apply with your resume and a covering letter outlining your relevant experience and motivation.
