Overview: Full-time, Continuing position Salary HEW 6 + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University About The Position Under the general direction of the Technical Coordinator, the Technical Officer is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the day-to-day operations of laboratories and workspaces, primarily within the Process Chemistry, Environmental, Polymer, Rheology & Characterisation laboratories, and more broadly across STEM as required.
The role provides expert, client-focused technical support for teaching and research activities, ensuring compliance with OH&S legislation and RMIT policies.
Key duties include developing and maintaining documentation (SOPs, SWIs, risk assessments, chemical registers), delivering inductions and training, managing equipment and consumables, planning maintenance, supporting the installation and commissioning of complex infrastructure, and contributing to safe, efficient, and agile operations.
The incumbent is expected to take accountability for their workload, positively influence team culture, and assist other technical teams as required.

To be successful in this position, you'll have: Experience and knowledge in the routine operation, maintenance, commissioning, and training of various forms of equipment or instruments related to Chemical and Environmental Engineering, including but not limited to Polymer, Rheology & Characterisation, Reactors, Extruder, Rheometers, TGA, DSC, Hyperflash, and mechanical capabilities.
Proven knowledge and experience working within a laboratory/workspace setting of Chemical Engineering, Polymer, and Rheology & Characterisation.
Proven laboratory operations and maintenance experience, preferably in a teaching or research environment.
Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industry regulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.
Proven initiative and problem-solving skills, highly organised, and the ability to work autonomously and in a team.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.
Demonstrated experience and understanding of working in accordance with the RMIT value statements or similar frameworks in other organisations.
