About the Faculty of Arts
We are part of one of the largest, most diverse, and dynamic arts faculties in Australia. We operate from a multi-campus and international standpoint, taking pride in the research capabilities of our staff, who not only work at the forefront in their fields but do so with enthusiasm and dedication.
The School of Philosophical, Historical, and International Studies is among the five Schools in the Faculty of Arts. It provides teaching across various fundamental areas of human societies and offers programs at all levels, including research degrees, postgraduate coursework, and majors within the Bachelor of Arts. It fosters an active research community, producing many publications for scholarly and general audiences.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking suitable candidates to assume the leadership role of Head of School for this domain. As the successful candidate, you will offer strategic guidance to the School, and be a part of the Faculty of Arts Executive team, contributing to the growth and functions of the Faculty. You will inspire staff with a compelling vision for education, engagement, and research. In your capacity as the Head of School, you will be tasked with outlining a vision for developing innovative educational programs that deliver exceptional student experiences, bolster and expand the research aspirations of the School, and establish meaningful and strategic partnerships with other academic initiatives and industries.
You will play a pivotal role in steering strategic transformations for the humanities, which include reshaping our curriculum, advancing efforts in decolonizing research and teaching, promoting deeper industry involvement across all domains, and enhancing recruitment for undergraduate and master's programs.
In this role, you will assume a significant responsibility in providing academic leadership and in fostering excellence in research, teaching, professional activities, and policy formulation within your academic discipline within the School, within the University, and throughout the broader community, both academic and general.
What Qualifications Are We Seeking?
To be considered for this opportunity, you should hold a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline and possess a consistent career track record fitting for a Professor appointment. You should be a seasoned, visionary leader displaying qualities of collaboration and collegiality, capable of uniting, inspiring, and cultivating an inclusive and supportive culture of high performance. Furthermore, you must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to engage effectively with fellow academics, mentor and nurture staff, and advocate for the School as a valuable member on various boards and committees within the Faculty and the University.
You should demonstrate proficiency in attracting and promoting a culture of garnering external funding in the forms of national competitive grants and other research income, as well as in fostering connections with industry, government, funding bodies, and professional organizations.
