The Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Systems conducts internationally leading research to deliver practical solutions for the sustainable management of complex agricultural enterprises and agroecosystems. We address key agricultural and environmental challenges at local, national and global scales, with the goal of delivering multifunctional landscapes that conserve and sustain our natural resources, whilst providing enhanced productivity.

This research-intensive position provides a unique opportunity for you to develop a novel research program focused on investigating how human-induced environmental change is affecting the chemical ecology of insects important to agriculture and forestry.

Who you are

You will be a researcher with a passion for investigating the impacts of the Anthropocene on insect chemical ecology. You will have an emerging profile as an independent researcher and enjoy working as a member of a dynamic multi-disciplinary research team to generate cutting edge research outcomes and practical solutions. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective relationships with collaborators and key stakeholders.

What you'll do

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Chemical Ecology) you will work to develop a research program, which will advance our critical understanding of anthropogenic impacts (e.g., air pollution, land-use change, extreme events) on the chemical ecology of insects of importance to agriculture and forestry (both pest and beneficial), and the ecosystem services and disservices those insects provide (e.g., pollination or pest-regulation).

To achieve this, you will be supported by a multidisciplinary research team of agricultural and environmental scientists, with a strong network of national and international collaborators. It is expected that you will operate independently as an academic, with supervision and guidance from more senior colleagues. You will be expected to:

  • Produce high quality research publications.
  • Contribute to the generation of research income, including submission of project applications to funding bodies).
  • Initiate, develop and lead research projects and develop collaborative partnerships.
  • Support HDR students to successful and timely completion.

Whilst the substantive focus of this role will be to undertake research, during your Fellowship you will be supported by the University to build capacity as a teaching and research academic through opportunities to develop teaching skills andundertake a level of independent teaching in your discipline.

What will help you succeed

To excel in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A doctoral qualification, or Masters qualification with significant experience, or equivalent accreditation and standing in chemical ecology or a related discipline.
  • A demonstrable record of scholarly achievement, including an emerging or established track record of peer-reviewed academic publications as a primary contributor.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in the study of chemical ecology of insects of importance to agriculture and forestry (both field and laboratory based), and ideally experience of studying anthropogenic effects on insect populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across a range of scientific disciplines.

Salary: Total remuneration range $125,372 to $148,185 pa (includes salary range of $105,933 to $125,209 pa, employer super contributions of 17% and annual leave loading)
