Our Journey

The Engage Team commenced at Casey Hospital mid-2021 and it has since expanded to Dandenong ED at the beginning of 2022. The team initially consisted of Senior Social Workers and now also includes Senior Consumer Peer Workers and a Mental Health/AOD Nurse. We are seeking Senior Family/Carer Peer Workers (level 3) to join the team. In this role you will provide mutual support, information and practical assistance to family members and carers attending the ED.

A Day in the Life

Working within the ED is exciting and rewarding – no two days are the same. You will provide mutual support, information and assistance to families and carers of patients presenting to the ED with mental health and substance use challenges. Key features of the role include:

  • Purposefully sharing your lived experience within the multidisciplinary team to promote the voice of carers
  • Working in a way that places consumers at the centre of all conversations about their care
  • Working closely with the Consumer Peer Workers, multidisciplinary team, and clinicians to promote a family inclusive approach that is sensitive and responsive to the needs and views of families/carers and consumers

The Senior Family/Carer Peer Worker (level 3) will form part of a 7-day rotating roster on the Engage Team, providing mutual support to family members and carers of patients presenting to Casey and Dandenong Hospital EDs. This role will also provide assertive outreach support post-discharge for eligible family members and carers. This is an opportunity to work in a unique team made up of social workers, peer workers and MH/AOD nurse dedicated to supporting people with complex psychosocial needs within the fast-paced emergency setting.

About the Role

The Family/Carer Peer Worker role has been developed for people who have lived experience of caring for a person (family member or friend) with mental health difficulties and recovery. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, Family/Carer Peer Workers will promote choice, self-determination and opportunities for family members and carers to seek or maintain socially valued roles and connections in their local communities. The Senior Family/Carer Peer Worker (Level 3) will work as part of the multidisciplinary team and establish strong, effective working relationships with clinical, allied health and other peer staff. In particular, they will require strong networking skills and manage areas of referral to both internal and external service providers.

The Senior Family/Carer Peer Worker (Level 3) will act as a recovery champion within the Emergency Department and Mental Health Program, and may be involved in other activities including training and education, improving experience of care, and service evaluation. The Senior Family/Carer Peer Worker (Level 3) will also mentor and provide reflective supervision (where required), to other Family/Carer Peer Workers within the Mental Health Program.

What you need:

  • Evidence of completion of the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training
  • Your own lived experience of caring for a family member, friend or loved one with mental health difficulties
  • Recognition and understanding of own family member or carer lived experience and ability to use this appropriately to support others
  • Ability to use own experience to inspire hope and belief in recovery
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence
