Melbourne, Victoria, Australia QinetiQ Full time

QinetiQ employs more than 8000 people in more than 50 locations around the world, offering our customers premier expertise in advice, services and creative technology-based products.

QinetiQ Australia, part of the global QinetiQ group, provides technological and scientific expertise to help customers protect and advance their vital interests.

As an innovative science and technology company, we help solve some of our customers' most challenging problems.

Our determination to deliver and improve today and anticipate and shape tomorrow, makes QinetiQ a very exciting, rewarding and respected place to work and learn.

Recently we announced the creation of the new 'Australia Sector''.

QinetiQ's commitment and investment in Australia is evidence of the ambition to build an integrated global defence and security company focused around our distinctive offerings and three home countries; the UK, the US and Australia.

The Australia Sector is headquartered in Canberra and has more than 1,200 employees worldwide.

With this change comes growth and opportunity.

Applications are now invited from suitably experienced Safety Excellence professionals for a new role within the Australia Sector.

In terms of location, we are flexible to consider applicants from all Australian capital cities.

In terms of the finer detail, in this key role you will:
Lead health and safety practice and standards for the Sector, working with the business units to ensure QinetiQ works safely and delivers safe products

Actively challenge, support and engage senior management on health, safety and environment performance, risks (and mitigations), priorities, direction and action

Own and manage the Sector Safety Management System

Define safety competence standards, in accordance with regulations and company policy

Work with the Sector and Group to build and strengthen safety competence across the Sector including a method to develop and embed lessons.

Establish and manage a safety communication program

Assess and issue safety delegations including endorsement of regulatory appointments

Conduct assurance activity including managing and executing an independent safety audit program

Oversee regulatory safety reporting and response for the Sector

Undertake and report safety incident investigations and develop strategies for addressing findings

Provide specialist, authoritative safety and hazard advice to the business

As an ideal applicant for this key new role, you'll present with:
Deep experience and a proven track record in the leadership of safety in a complex, safety critical enterprise in an environment such as defence, aviation, trials or another complex, engineering development oriented environment underpinned by relevant qualifications

Demonstrated strength in leading high performance safety teams

Experience in leading transformation of safety management

Demonstrated skills in safety investigation and in effectively conveying findings and advice to business leaders in verbal and written forms

Experience in complex engagement with regulators and investigation bureaus

Superior leadership, interpersonal, relationship building and influencing abilities - demonstrated through your proven experience in influencing positive change and outcomes in safety excellence

Whilst not essential, noting the complex, technical nature of our business, exposure to safety management within energetics and munitions and/or live range trials (air, land and/or maritime) will be highly regarded.

Experience operating in international organisations with multi-national operations will be viewed favourably.

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be eligible for Australian Defence security clearance. A current security clearance to NV1 level will be considered favourably.
