In this role you will

  • Use Adobe Premiere Pro to a high standard to edit accurately and quickly for audiences onsite, on YouTube and on our social media platforms.
  • Edit videos in the Guardian style, including effective use of captions, subtitles, and namestraps. Write descriptive headlines and standfirsts, including internal and/or external hyperlinks where possible, and ensure optimal tagging and slugwords
  • Verify and edit quickturnaround breaking/reactive news video clips from news agencies and usergenerated content, and produce video news reports made up of these clips
  • Quickly edit short video clips that are integral to telling the stories of the day, and effectively prioritising video publication during busy periods and for live blogs
  • Work with the news desk to make sure the best video offerings are promoted across the Guardian; monitoring internal tools for opportunities to match video production to stories that are driving traffic
  • Handle news desk requests for video and ensure video is embedded in content across the Guardian
  • Work with the social platforms team on quick clips and cutdown versions of reports
  • Manage wires to make best use of contracts and finding suitable video content online for Guardian news stories.
  • Identify and act upon relevant video material which can be used by the Guardian, and be ready to screencapture live broadcast for breaking Australia news
You'll bring

  • Experience editing video in a breaking news environment
  • Strong general technical aptitude and editing ability, with particular skill editing at speed on Adobe Premiere Pro. It's a bonus if you have Photoshop and After Effects skills
  • Strong news sense of Australian and global news
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, plus experience juggling multiple deadlines
  • An understanding of the evolving ways people consume news video on and off platform
  • Experience of working with news agency feeds, and liaising with agency desks
  • Understanding of production methods used in online media production
  • Good editorial judgement
  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
