The Opportunity:


The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is seeking an Interpretation and Public Programs Manager to enhance Parliament's status as an iconic building and location of national significance.


  • The Cultural Strategy and Experience team is part of the Parliamentary Engagement Branch which develops and delivers engaging experiences for parliamentarians, building occupants, tourists, and schools. By forging strong, enduring industry partnerships and respectful internal collaborations, we support the efficient and effective operation of Parliament House to ensure that the public can experience the heart of Australian democracy. Our branch is committed to being a sustainable, efficient, and engaged team that embraces innovation and change to deliver exceptional client focus.
  • The Interpretation and Public Programs manager will collaborate with relevant areas of DPS to devise and promote programs that engage the community with Australian parliamentary democracy and the architecture of Parliament House and its collection. The role will initiate and lead strategic direction for the development of new opportunities and external collaborations.

Cultural Strategy and Experience

  • Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the PEL 1 classification.
The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Establish a new Interpretation and Public Programs program to enhance Parliament's status as an iconic building and location of national significance
  • Create, deliver, and evaluate curated public programs which deepen understanding about Parliament House, the art collections and architecture, and its role in recording and celebrating Australia's political history
  • Introduce new processes and approaches to lead the development of accessible and authoritative content for public programs and produce quality, enduring and flexible content across platforms for diverse audiences
  • Assist the Director in building a positive and sustainable culture, ensuring Interpretation and Public programs staff are a continually developing, productive and high functioning part of the Cultural Strategy and Experience team
  • Actively develop and maintain strong working relationships across the department, other parliamentary departments and with external cultural institutions
  • Undertake other projects to support the Cultural Strategy and Experience team and assignments of a complex nature, including retail operations and visitor engagement
  • Research and prepare strategic advice, information and briefing notes of a complex nature including the drafting of response letters and briefs as required.

Selection criteria

  • 1. Substantial track record in the development and delivery of high quality, creative and strategic public programs and events for diverse audiences in a museum, gallery or cultural environment.
  • Proven high level organisation and project management skills including ability to work to deadlines, organise priorities and manage resources to achieve agreed goals.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to directly manage and support staff, work effectively as part of a team, and with other stakeholders and external parties.
  • Proven experience in understanding and championing workplace responsibilities and developing a proactive culture of introducing new and improved work practices.
