A little bit about us


The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) and Bureau of Communications, Arts and Regional Research (BCARR) make up the department's data, statistics and research branch.

BCARR and BITRE provide data, research and advice to support evidence-based policy and program development, and to stimulate informed discussion and debate on issues critical to the portfolio.


The Bureaux are staffed by talented data scientists, engineers, analysts and researchers who examine critical issues impacting the vibrant and diverse portfolio sectors, and collect and manage unique road, aviation, maritime, and rail transport data collections which are made available as open data, statistical publication, research reports, dashboards and interactive maps.


The Bureaux provide a dynamic and supportive work environment with an emphasis on learning and development, with opportunities for mentorship by policy, data and research experts.

The opportunity we have available
The Road Safety Data and Analysis team manages the collection and publication of essential national road safety data.

We work closely with the Road Safety Data Hub and the Office of Road Safety to ensure the evidence base, data management, and technology platforms for road safety data are continuously improving to support road safety policy and programs.


The Aviation Section informs analysis of Australian aviation through production of regular domestic and international aviation statistics (including airline activity, domestic on time performance, domestic airfares index, airfreight, airport traffic and general aviation activity).


The National Freight Data Hub Section supports improvement in the efficiency, productivity, safety and resilience of our freight and supply chains through delivery of the accessible data and insights.


What will you do?


In this role you will manage the regular collection, curation, and publication of road safety data for monthly, quarterly and annual releases.


Your day to day work will include:

  • Project managing statistical publications including the allocation of resources, collecting data from stakeholders, and constructing and releasing bulletins, dashboards, and reports.-
  • Engagement and communication, building positive relationships with state and territory data owners and custodians as well as internal stakeholders.-
  • Validating, organising and describing data and metadata for publication and research. In particular cleaning data
  • reviewing it for inconsistencies and investigating where required. Exploring opportunities for efficiency including automation of 'Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes.-
  • Contributing to leading practice data management in data custodian and data steward roles. Supporting the department Data Strategy, including communities of practice and platform development.-
