North Sydney Council, Australia The Australian Financial Review Full time

Company Description

The Australian Financial Review has played a central role in informing and charting the business life of the nation since 1951.

In 2024, The Australian Financial Review remains the essential daily habit of business decision makers, investors and those who promote national prosperity.

The nation's most-trusted newspaper brand has become a national institution, widely regarded as Australia's premium business, finance and political publication and recognised for it's news-breaking, agenda-setting and authoritative journalism.

The Financial Review is part of Nine, Australia's largest locally owned media company - the home of Australia's most trusted and loved brands spanning News, Sport, Lifestyle, and Entertainment.

We pride ourselves on creating the best content, accessed by consumers when and how they want - across Publishing, Broadcasting and Digital

The primary responsibility of the breaking news reporter will be to run our Need to Know blog.

This will include quickly writing accurate, concise, compelling posts that conform to house style, working angles and headlines hard, and selecting interesting imagery and graphics to ensure the blog not only reads well, but looks great too.

Day to day you will:

  • Monitor and respond to breaking news across a range of platforms
  • Source and generate your own unique content ideas
  • Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, timely posts that conform to house style
  • Be proactive about the visual presentation of the blog, including through commissioning accompanying photography and graphics
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, who also contribute to the blog
  • Ensure all copy meets legal requirements

Please note, the role is a full time, permanent position and will require early morning starts and some weekend work.

Qualifications

In its current form Need to Know covers politics, parliamentary inquiries, policy, regulatory, and human interest news for a national, business-focused audience.

An interest in business and economics is crucial, and while reporting experience in these fields is desirable it is not essential.

Curiosity, however, about the influence of business in politics and society is a must

What we would like to see:

  • Previous experience in a major newsroom
  • A passion for news and current affairs
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently when required
  • Digital production skills including headline writing and image selection
  • An understanding of SEO, or a willingness to learn

Additional Information Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion**:

Disclaimer:
We do not accept unsolicited agency resumes and are not responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.
