We are seeking an Assistant news editor working alongside other desk editors, the assistant news editor will be responsible for planning, commissioning and editing news stories for Guardian Australia

**You'll work on /In this role you will**
- Help set Guardian Australia's news agenda by proposing original ideas for news and feature stories
- Commission reporters and edit news stories for the site
- Monitor news sources, eg wire services, news websites, social media and broadcast media for breaking news
- In conjunction with other editors, ensure headlines, pictures and placement give the best possible presentation to stories on the site
- Recognise potential legal issues and ensure they are resolved prior to publishing
- Work with reporters on planning and story ideas, and deliver feedback
- Devise innovative and interesting ways of telling stories

**You'll bring.**
- A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values

**Knowledge and experience**
- Good grasp of national and international news
- Excellent understanding of diversity and inclusion issues
- Specialist knowledge in a commissioning area would be an advantage
- Experience of working in a fast-changing and high-pressure environment, preferably on a news website
- Knowledge/awareness of the demands of digital journalism
- Significant journalistic experience
- Good understanding of Guardian values
- Good understanding of media law

This role is being offered on a 12-month contract working across a seven-day roster with flexible hours but predominantly afternoon and evening editing work.
