Director, Policy

to lead engagement with key industry bodies, ministerial offices, government departments and industry representatives.

The Director Policy is a pivotal leadership role, responsible for leading the provision of expert policy advice, establishing frameworks for strategic policy issues, and managing consultations with key industry stakeholders.

This role requires a deep understanding of policy development, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate and influence complex regulatory environments.

Reporting into the Chief Executive, this role will be responsible for establishing and maintaining systems to deliver consistent, high-quality policy advice, identifying emerging strategic issues and their potential impact on the rail industry and prioritising areas where strategic policy advice is needed.

This position is also responsible for leading the review and evaluation of safety programs, projects, and policy reform initiatives to assess their effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.

This key role will represent ONRSR and the Chief Executive on national initiatives, committees, or projects, you will also liaise with relevant Divisions as required.

As a thought leader, you will stay updated on current and emerging issues, trends, best practices, and innovative approaches both domestically and internationally, identifying opportunities for reform to support ONRSR's business objectives.

About you – your impact and contributionYou will have a proven record of achievement at a senior level in formulating strategy and policy that has led to substantive change.

You will possess a superior understanding of government operations, particularly in relation to legislation and reform proposals.

You will be able to demonstrate strong leadership and the ability to influence others, leveraging highly developed communication, liaison, and interpersonal skills to build constructive professional relationships at all levels.

To perform this role successfully, it is expected that you have had more than 5 years' experience leading at senior level and the capacity to share knowledge and provide coaching and mentoring for staff.

You will be capable of motivating, encouraging, and inspiring a strong, efficient, and ethical team focused on delivering planned outcomes and developing individual team members' capabilities.

Extensive experience in delivering successful outcomes in diverse and challenging organisational environments, along with excellent knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, standards, and codes of practice, is essential.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong initiative, drive and responsiveness to emerging opportunities, showcase your leadership capability to effectively influence and negotiate successful outcomes.

You will adeptly resolve complex matters, gain stakeholder support and minimise organisation risk. Additionally, you will possess effective planning, coordination, and time management skills to ensure that deadlines are met consistently.
