About Us

Sustainability is one of Murdoch's core strategic objectives, and amongst our highest regarded areas of teaching and research.

We were among the first universities in the world to offer sustainability courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and we have graduated over 100 PhD students.


Today, Murdoch offers a comprehensive suite of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in, Sustainable Development, International Aid & Development and Community Development.

Our Sustainable Development discipline comprises a vibrant team of multidisciplinary researchers and teachers with backgrounds in political ecology, geography, anthropology, and development studies, many of whom have years of practitioner experience.


Our courses are continuing to grow and include significant numbers of international students, who bring global perspectives to some of the great challenges of our time.

Our alumni have become change agents all over the world.


The sustainable development discipline is located within the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, which explores complex issues that arise from our past, shape our present, and determine our future.

The School offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a broad range of disciplines, including politics, international relations, history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, theatre, community development, sustainable development, and tourism.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint up a number of Associate Lecturers and Lecturers to our Sustainable Development team.

They will make outstanding contributions to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students, to the professional practice of the program, and to the University's engagement with industry and community.


These roles are an excellent opportunity for early or mid-career academics and professionals in Sustainable Development who seek to build a strong and interdisciplinary teaching portfolio in university education.

Successful applicants will work closely with others in the delivery of undergraduate and/or postgraduate units in Sustainable Development. Our units are usually team-taught by a skilled group of academics and practitioners.

Successful applicants will therefore undertake a range of teaching, research and service duties, which may include any of the following:

  • Prepare and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate classes in a range of facetoface, online and blended modes.
  • Supervise honours and/or postgraduate research.
  • Achieve impact through engagement with industry, community, government, media and/or highereducation organisations.
  • Produce quality research outcomes.
  • Contribute actively and meaningfully to the development of the discipline team.
  • Undertake broad administrative functions.
What You'll Bring to this Role

A PhD in a relevant discipline and/or equivalent industry experience in sustainable development, with expertise in the theory and practice of such areas as:

  • urban and regional sustainability,
- systems thinking for sustainability,
- industry engagement in sustainable development,
- the history and political economy of sustainable development,
- behaviour-change for sustainability, and
- community-led sustainability action.

  • Demonstrated university experience in the teaching of sustainable development, or two or more years of postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience in sustainable development.
  • Experience in the delivery of high-quality learning experiences in face-to-face, online and other contexts.
  • Commitment to promoting student engagement and retention through teaching and learning.
  • Ability to contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Excellent communicative ability in English.
  • Understanding of the importance of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the capability to advocate for their value.
  • Excellent problem-solving, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficient administrative skills to support your academic duties.
