  • About Us
  • The School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics currently consists of 22 academic staff, but is intending to expand. The School teaches its own undergraduate Courses (BSc Mathematical Sciences and BSc Physical Sciences) and a Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy. The School also has an important responsibility to deliver mathematics, statistics and science units as service teaching to the broader university community. The School's three undergraduate majors (in Mathematics & Statistics, in
Physics, and in Chemistry) are also taken by students from other degrees as second majors. We also contribute strongly to majors in Data Analytics, Forensic Chemistry and Secondary Education.


Generally, we have an applied focus in both our teaching and research and so value our deep collaborations with a wide range of industries and government bodies.

There are currently 8 academics in Mathematics and Statistics.

Their research spans biostatistics, mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, industrial mathematics, materials geometry and differential geometry, computational mathematics, stochastic and Bayesian statistics.

The Role


A Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics (Level B) is expected to contribute significantly to the teaching of Mathematics and Statistics through the preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, other types of teaching activities, and supervision of honours and postgraduate students and is expected to perform a range of administrative and service functions within the College and across the University.

This position is also expected to develop scholarly research outputs and to perform professional activities relevant to the discipline.

What you'll bring to this role

  • A PhD in an area relevant to the appointment (i.e. mathematics and/or statistics, or a closely related discipline).
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching in the discipline or profession, or two or more years of postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under broad direction only, exercise initiative in undertaking responsibilities and work effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in high quality independent research, with an established record of scholarly publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise honours, postgraduate and/or HDR students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary approaches to curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team.
  • Demonstrated high levels of written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Commitment to Staff code of conduct and University strategy.
