The Aboriginal Services Unit (ASU) is a specialist team within the Department of Communities & Justice that delivers services and programs to Aboriginal court users.

We also lead work on Closing the Gap, and influence other areas of the department to in projects and policy development through our informed and expert knowledge of Aboriginal people experiencing the NSW justice system as victims and offenders.


About the role


The Aboriginal Coronial Information and Support Officer is responsible for working in partnership with the Coordinator and other staff of the Coronial Information and Support Program (CISP) to, provide information and support to improve the experiences of Aboriginal clients and families affected by deaths reported to the Coroner in New South Wales.

The role provides culturally safe and sensitive support to Aboriginal people and families to successfully navigate the coronial process and requires the occupant to travel across NSW to provide practice supports to Aboriginal people and families during coronial inquests.


Essential requirements

  • Aboriginality typically all or the majority of the work of an Aboriginal identified role will involve the development and delivery of policy, programs and services which impact on Aboriginal people and or involve liaising directly with Aboriginal people and communities.
  • A current driver's licence (unrestricted) and willingness to travel to regional areas is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage and support Aboriginal people and their families in challenging circumstances
  • Experience advocating for clients' needs and providing practical supports
  • Be willing to work collaboratively with internal and external service providers to deliver improved experiences for Aboriginal people and families
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Manage integrity of client information and files so that information is relevant, accurate and secure.
