About the role

The Staff Specialist, Queensland Antimicrobial Stewardship Program a key member of a multidisciplinary team formed to optimize the use of antimicrobials in Queensland HHS facilities in order to prevent the emergence of multi-resistant organisms, improve the outcome of infection, ensure cost-effectiveness and reduce adverse effects of antimicrobials.

The staff specialist will assist the director in ensuring that the program achieves its aims

  • To provide clinical antimicrobial stewardship support for HHSs who do not have a resident infectious diseases physician or microbiologist
  • To position Queensland Health as the national leader responding to the risk of antimicrobial resistance and inappropriate antimicrobial use
  • To slow the emergence of multiresistant organisms and Clostridium difficile
  • To improve clinical outcomes of infection
  • To reduce inappropriate antimicrobial usage and thereby preventing avoidable adverse effects
  • To avoid adverse outcomes related to intravenous access device complications by decreasing the use of intravenous antimicrobials and encouraging a switch to oral antibiotics
  • To assist Queensland facilities to meet the requirements outlined in the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards pertaining to Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • To reduce healthcare costs by avoiding healthcarerelated infections, reduced drug expenditure and decrease length of stay
  • To support a statewide antimicrobial education program to increase the acceptance of stewardship strategies
  • To support surveillance strategies and programs that assist in the Queensland Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy


The staff specialist will actively participate in educational activities, guideline preparation, systems design, scoping and development of information technology solutions, engagement of key stakeholders, and on-call responsibilities for the antimicrobials hotline.

Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and specialist registration in Infectious Diseases and/or Microbiology with the Medical Board of Australia.
