About the Role:


The primary function of the CFA involves providing expert advice to local and state authorities regarding land use planning, emergency management, and fire prevention strategies.

The Bushfire Planning Coordinator plays a pivotal role in this function.

The responsibilities of the role involve assessing planning permit referrals to CFA, providing expertise on Victoria Planning Provisions, and conducting assessments on bushfire behaviour, vegetation, and overall bushfire risk

More specifically:

  • Provide expert 'bushfire planning' advice to inform CFA's decisionmaking as a referral authority under the Planning and Environment Act 198
  • Advocate CFA's fire safety stance, influencing outcomes and representing the organization.
  • Lead solution and implement solutions aligned with CFA needs.
  • Advocate CFA's requirements to government and industry bodies.
  • Foster effective internal and external relationships, including with local government and industry.
  • Resolve complex issues in land use planning, emergency management, and fire prevention.
  • Contribute to safety policies, assessing their alignment with land use planning and related matters.
  • Monitor, review, and report on CFA's performance in land use planning, emergency management, and fire prevention.
  • Execute projects to support CFA's fire safety program.
  • Manage staff to ensure statutory obligations, activities, and outputs are met as required.

About You:

  • Tertiary qualification and/or significant demonstrated experience, skills, and knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
Urban and/or Regional Land Use Planning (statutory and/or strategic)

Natural Resource Management or Environmental Science

Bushfire behaviour and/or Bush Firefighting strategies and techniques

  • A demonstrated understanding of Victorian planning legislation, the Victorian planning system and the operation of the Victoria Planning Provisions (VPP); and the ability to interpret other legislation relevant to CFA's role in community safety.
  • High level leadership skills with experience in the management and coordination of staff.
  • Ability to advocate and articulate information to influence stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated highlevel problemsolving skills and a proven ability to facilitate an outcome from conflicting positions
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including monitoring, assessment, and reporting
