About us

As a department our purpose is to assist the community in preventing, preparing for, responding to and recovering from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the leading provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services across Queensland. The department comprises the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service, and the State Emergency Service, along with support for other volunteer groups offering emergency response to Queenslanders.

QFES is a single department offering multiple services, capabilities, and partnerships.

Purpose of the role

Human Resource Services is tasked with providing expert advice and assistance to regional and state office managers and staff throughout the employee lifecycle, covering employee entitlements, HR systems, establishment management, and local recruitment and selection. The team's responsibilities also include developing, implementing, and delivering HR initiatives, policies, and resources to ensure compliance and best practices, aligning with the needs of the government, department, and business units.

Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will lead a team of HR professionals dispersed across Queensland, supporting staff and managers in managing daily human resource activities and entitlements. Additionally, you will collaborate with subject matter experts, stakeholders, and senior management to deliver timely, innovative outcomes tailored to our diverse workforce. Your role will involve contributions to HR policy development and implementation, coordination of projects, and offering advice to influence strategic decision-making.

Your key accountabilities

Your role in supporting frontline services and the ongoing success of our department will entail various responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

  • Leading and overseeing the provision of strategic HR advice, support, and outcomes on a wide range of people-related issues to drive decision-making processes.
  • Utilizing collaborative research insights to design, develop, and implement (online and face-to-face) policies, procedures, and resources, including innovative HR strategies and initiatives.
  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with subject matter experts and internal/external stakeholders to address organizational needs and enhance all stages of the employee life cycle.
  • Staying updated on HR practices, systems, emerging trends, and industrial instruments to facilitate change, ensure compliance, manage governance, and identify opportunities for business enhancement.
  • Preparing and delivering high-level reports, correspondence, and briefings on various complex HR matters and initiatives in alignment with departmental guidelines.
  • Representing QFES, engaging in HR projects and working groups to ensure timely delivery of outcomes meeting business requirements.
  • Enhancing HR capabilities across the workforce and assisting managers in fulfilling their duties for effective people management.
  • Improving team abilities by coaching, providing feedback, resolving conflicts, and promoting career development.
