About the team

Cancer Council is a cancer information and support service that is available to anyone with a question about cancer including patients, carers, family members, health professionals and public. The service is staffed by experienced oncology health professionals and is delivered via phone and online communication channels.

About the role:

The key purpose of the Information and Support Consultant is to provide comprehensive, credible information and psychological support and, where appropriate, navigate to both internal and external services. The position complements the existing cancer services and ensures that all individuals have timely access to cancer information and support. Please note: this position is required to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide clients of the Service with information and navigation to health services, Cancer Council, and community-based cancer supportive care services.
  • Provide short term emotional support to people affected by cancer and navigate to psychosocial services for ongoing support if needed.
  • Provide day to day delivery of the service including:
    • a timely client focused response to contacts of the service
    • demonstration and ongoing development of oncology knowledge, cancer services knowledge and referral pathways
    • collection of National Minimum Dataset (NMDS) data and ensure data integrity in Cancer Council's Client Relationship Management (CRM) system
    • adherence to service policies and procedures and ensure continuous improvement of the service
    • compliance with National service quality assurance and submit relevant quality assurance activities
  • Build strong and effective relationships with health professionals who contact to ensure that the service and other CCNSW supportive care services complement existing health services and patient outcomes.
  • Work closely with Lead, Information & Support and Lead, Cancer Council Liaisons to build and maintain a robust and current database of cancer, health and community knowledge, information, and services database.
  • In consultation and collaboration with the Manager, Direct Cancer Support unit and Lead contribute subject matter expertise to internal and external priority projects as needed.
  • Assist with promotional requests for the service including presentations to internal or external stakeholders.
  • Attend all training, development and organisational engagements opportunities as required by CCNSW.
  • Demonstrate a client centric culture by actively working to improve our understanding of client needs and enhance the client experience across CCNSW services.

About you

Essential:

  • Qualifications in nursing or allied health. Current registration with APHRA (nurse/radiation therapist /physiotherapist /psychologist) or tertiary qualification which provides eligibility to the relevant professional association (social work/dietetics).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the supportive care needs of people affected by cancer.
  • Experience working with and providing support to people experiencing elevated levels of distress
  • Experience assessing patient or client needs and making appropriate referrals to health professionals and services
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and develop effective relationships with health professionals, community services, and non-government organisations.
  • Previous experience working in a clinical environment, preferably in oncology
  • Effective communication skills (and ability to adapt appropriately to professional, clinical and community audiences) and experience presenting to both professional and community audiences
  • Ability to initiate, problem solve and adapt priorities as needed
  • Demonstrated skills in improving systems and processes.
  • Experience using client management databases and computer literacy in Microsoft Office suite of programs - Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desirable:

  • Experience developing the public profile of an organisation or program
  • Experience managing projects and change
